Mixed kata flow drill

https://youtu.be/GiI5i16TyXY

This flow drill utilizes applications from a number of katas including Kanku Dai, Heian Yondan, Heian Godan, Chinte and Gankaku. The uke is semi-compliant in that he covers up from attacks but does not attempt any attacks on his own. The drill teaches a means to flow into 'backup plans' when attacks fail. Not explained in the video is the throw at the end which comes from Kanku Dai. I've borrowed many of the applications shown in this video from Iain's work.

The audio is a bit rough.

I'm always fond of drills that take the opponent's natural defensive reactions into account. Dealing with offense is vital, of course, but sometimes it is the resultant defense of your response that causes fights to drag on. We also have a tendency to blend from one kata into another, as well. Thanks for sharing!

Nice drill! Thanks for posting! Always fun to "cross the steams" like that and it provides a good illustration of how bunkai is actually applied i.e. NOT slavishly following the kata but as needed. The fact the drill encourages remaining dominant is also something I like about it.

All the best,

Iain

PS People just need to click on the link to watch.  I normally embed all videos so people can watch them from with the thread. Embeding is disabled for this video so that’s why I’ve not done so.
