Hello, everyone!
This week, we use the kata Gorin as a vehicle for covering a bunkai concept for juji-uke/tsuki, crossed hand positions that are found in various kata. Gorin no Kata was developed by Nakazato Shugoro Sensei to demonstrate at the 1996 Olympic Games, so it is only practiced by members of the Shorinkan, but he developed the kata by assembling pieces of other extant kata from various sources.
Interesting! Is there a video of it you could point us to? Always keen to see a new kata!
All the best,
Iain
Nice Wastelander, I like the applications. As Iain I'm interested in this kata never heard of it before. Kind regards Les
Thanks! There is a video of Nakazato Shugoro Sensei demonstrating it on YouTube:
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. There’s certainly a few sequences we can recognise there from other kata, but the overall structure and nature is really unique. At what level is it typically taught?
All the best,
Iain
It is typically saved for last, and not all Shorinkan schools even require it. For us, it is the last one you learn, and we have to be able to perform all of the kata in the system for Shodan
Thank you for sharing that. All very interesting :-)
