Offensive Uke-Waza Drills

Hello, everyone,

This week's Waza Wednesday goes over a drill for working uke-waza (receiving techniques) in an offensive manner, by incorporating them into a striking sequence, and it also features our California affiliate, Geoff Mires.

I like it! I also enjoy integrating pads and partners and I like what you’ve done here.

Always good to see Geoff too! He’s my nomination for “World’s Most Enthusiastic Martial Artist” :-)

All the best,

Iain

Very good, thanks for posting it here.

I see that when you turn to apply the arm bar, you turn on the balls of your feet. Is that on purpose? Have you tried turn on the heels there?

I feel that turning on the heels might add extra force to the arm bar because you would move your body into the arm. When you turn on the balls of the feet you move your body a little bit out of the way and have to turn further to put pressure on the elbow. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks and take care,

Marc

Thanks, Marc. It depends on the lock I'm doing, but in this case you are absolutely right that pivoting on the heels would put more of my weight directly into the lock. Unfortunately, with the weather we have been having lately, my knees have been bothering me, and pivoting on the heels was irritating them. I actually didn't even realize that I had made that adjustment until after the fact :P
