A Kata Challenge for Karate Day

My friends over at Karate Culture challenged me to a Kata-Off in honor of Karate Day, which is a day the Okinawan Prefectural Government designated in honor and appreciation of Okinawan karate. While I'm passing it on to three people--one of whom is our very own Iain Abernethy!--I also think everyone should participate and spread the love around! Just record a video of yourself running kata, and challenge someone else to do the same!

I also urge everyone to participate in the 100 Kata Challenge on Karate Day, itself--that is, run 100 kata in a row on October 25th to celebrate the impact that karate has had on your life. I did it last year with Naihanchi Shodan, and I think I'll do Naihanchi Nidan this year.

We did this last year, it was great fun. I dare say we'll be doing it again!

We did 20 reps each of gekisai 1, gekisai 2, saifa, seiyunchin and shisochin.

Nice looking video Noah! Thanks for the inclusion too … but I’m afraid I’m going to have to be a “party-pooper” and decline. I’m just way too busy on all fronts. Today is the first time I’ve been able to see this post, I have a hectic schedule in place for the next two days, and I fly to Germany for three days first thing on Friday morning. I therefore stand no chance of filming anything and getting it up on online this week without reneging on exiting training, family and work commitments. Sorry!

All the best,

Iain

Aw, well that's too bad. Have a good time on your trip, though!

Have any of your other challengers responded? I wouldn't mind seeing Ryan Parker practice a kata. He looks like he could break a guy in half. I think we should all try and contribute a video. It might not be as slick as yours but a good kata is a good kata despite the video quality. Kudos for throwing down the gauntlet.

They have confirmed that they are aware of the challenge, and plan to record their kata, but haven't gotten around to it as of yet. In all fairness, Ryan Parker was traveling last week to attend our Ryukyu Martial Arts Friendship Gasshuku, so he has a legitimate excuse :P.
