Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan Chest Block in Hook Stance Drill 1

Hello,

The reverse chest block in hook stance is a dynamic, fast move in Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan. But it can be challenging to learn and awkward to perform, leaving some students to wonder about practical applications for this sequence. In this video, we look at how we can use this movement to reposition our enemy in relation to ourself or move ourself in relation to the enemy in order to facilitate counter strikes and escape. This drill links the shuto ukes with the chest block in hook stance, followed by the front kick and reverse punch sequence.

Note: the kata shows the sequence on both sides, indicating that you can initiate the move from either the left-hand shuto uke or the right-hand shuto-uke. You should practice the drill on both sides.

Best,

David

Hi David,

thanks for the video. In Shotokan we don't have the hook stance. We simply step out with the left foot into zenkutsu-dachi (front stance). Still for me the applications are the same.

All the best,

Marc
