Heavy Bag Bunkai Drills Fukyugata Ichi

Hello,

To commemorate Shoshin Nagamine, founder of Matsubayashi Ryu, on the anniversary of his birth (July 15, 1907), here are three bunkai application drills you can work on the heavy bag based upon the kata Nagamine created--Fukyugata Ich.

Best,

David

Another good video David! I hope it will get other people to consider how they can also apply kata on the bag.

Tying a belt around the bag can help as it will give us something extra to grab. If you type is “lop sided”, so one of the hanging bits is far longer than the other, you can use the long one as a substitute for the arm, the short one as the chin / hair, and the bit wrapped around the bag as clothing.

Thanks once again for sharing!

All the best,

Iain

Thanks for the great feedback! I have used a belt to simulate an arm already grabbed, and I'm trying to figure out a way to have an object simulate an arm that you can parry and grab with the other hand. I think maybe Noah or Jeb has a video with such a device? But, I really like the idea of the smaller bit of the belt (tied lopsided) serving as chin or face--I think it important to practice grabbing something, as it is actually more difficult than we might think to grab in the midst of a flurry of techniques.

The college where I teach literature and taught the karate class as an elective decided to cancel the karate classes, at least in the coming year or so (budget issues...). So, I'm once again going Ronin... LOL. So, when I finish the Pinan Nidan set of videos (filming is done, just need to assemble the vids), I may work out some more bunkai bag drills.

Best,

David

I love bagwork, and I always enjoy finding ways to train the kata. And yes, I'm a big fan of training dummies, in various forms, for incorporating limb control into solo training. Sometimes, I will tie a belt or belts to the bag, in various configurations. Other times I will tie a stick or pipe to the bag. Then, of course, there is building an actual kakiya/kakete-biki.

Yes, I thought it was Noah who had all these great ideas!! Thanks for sharing (again)! It seems I'll be training Ronin style the next year or so, so these will be helpful for me.

Best,

David

Glad to be of assistance! I'll be training "Ronin style" next year, myself, so these kinds of things are super helpful, at least for me!
