Shito-Ryu Karate

Hi Everyone,

I have a background in Shotokan, but, due the unavailability of any Shotokan club other than 'kick/punch/block' in my area here in South-East France, I have just started training at a Shito-Ryu club.  I was just wondering if anyone has experience of this style and can give me some info about it?  I have looked on the 'net and uncovered a bit about the history, but if anyone has any experience of it, I'd like to know.  Also, reading materiel would be good, so pointers would be appreciated, if possible.

Thanks.

Nick

From my brief training and sparring encounter with ONE visiting English Shukokai Yudansha ten years ago it is a fighing oriented system that uses a distinctive kiai....  This individuals kata performance reminded me a cross between good Shotokan and Okinawan Goju-  once again with an interisting kiai.  I thought that the Shukokai bunkai that were shown to me were some of the most practical I have seen:  with a lot a judo/jujutsu type finishing techniques.   I even swiped one or two techniques for my Hapkido sylabus.   Nick,  I Hope my brief thoughts and observations help.  If your new club isn't Shukokai Shito Ryu thoughts won't be too helpful.

Hi Nick.

I am a practitioner of Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu in the south of Germany for about 20 years now. As I know, the french Shito-Ryu is following Master Nakahashi and there are some smaller differences between both.

To my students I explain it in this way: Goju-Ryu on the one side, Shotokan on the other and Shito-Ryu in between. Also you find in Shito-Ryu the Kata from the other styles also, but with variations of course.

@Lee: I am glad to see that there are also other Shito-Ryu-Practitioner studying Iains Bunkai-Jutsu.

Regards from Germany and sorry for my poor english.
