Recommended Reading for Karate Research

Hi all, I'm undertaking an attempt to try and compile as much information as I can on Karate and the practical use of it's Techniques, Methods and Kata.

As such I'm looking for some VERY recommended reading in order to get my mind jogging, and I figured this forum would be the best place to start looking around and asking questions.

At the moment I'm using the following Books:

Mario McKenna's translations of : An Overview of Karatedo, Karate Kempo: The Art of Self-defense, The Study of Seipai, The Study of China Hand Techniques.

Patrick McCarthy's 2016 translation of the Bubishi as well as his Legend of the Fist book.

I apologise in advance if this is the wrong board/forum and would greatly love any resources you'd be willing to recommend!

Cheers and a big thumbs up!

I'm not an expert or even an instructor but I really like The Way of Kata by Lawrence Kane and Kris Wilder.   They also do a book called the Way of Sanchin.

Hi,

There's an old thread on the forum called "Reading material recommendations" with quite a number of book suggestions. Type that in the search bar and have a scroll through. Everything I would recommend off the top of my head is listed there plus more options. I'd also recommend videos as a great resource. Dvds and online are good places to look. If you want a good summary of the ideas behind kata and bunkai, Iain posted an hour long youtube video on the topic called "Kata bunkai explained."

Cheers

Chris

This podcast I did a while ago may be helpful:

You can find that thread here:

The recommended section of this forum also has lots of good resources:

All the best,
