Here's a viewpoint from an ex karateka converted to grappling arts.
As a karateka I struggled to accept the standard explanation of many techniques, both basics (like blocks in particular, but also some of the less practical stances and kicks etc) as well as kata.
Since I've defected to the dark side of aikido and jiu-jitsu, I keep seeing those karate basics and kata moves, in pretty much everything we do. Sometimes it's a kind of close approximation, but often it's pretty much bang on. Just the other day I saw the seemingly pointless kind 9f side stance and down/side backfist from passai, while being shown how to prevent an a floored opponent from dragging you down for the strangle.
Perhaps it's because I mostly have the infamous 3k experience, but I always found it odd that kata doesn't seem to fit quite in with basics, but now I've moved to grappling, suddenly my karate makes much more sense.
I like your techniques and the proficiency with which you execute and explain them.
Your drill allows students to experience how throws exploit the momentum the opponents gives you. They push, you turn and redirect them to the ground. Also nice applications for moves from heian sandan and godan.
Nice video, good stuff which fits very well with practical karate training
Thank you Chris.
Lovely stuff as always Les! Thanks for sharing!
It's always fun to work this stuff into classes, and point out when people use kata movements without realizing it. Thanks for sharing!

Iain, Noah thank you! Anf I know what you mean, when I started wrestling karate started to have more sense :)
Kind regards
Les
Les, thanks for posting this one. I enjoyed the concepts you displayed and the way you integrate them with your pummeling drill. Much appreciated!
Thank you :)

Love your stuff. Take care,
