I often find that when you give karateka focus mitts that they want to become boxers. As karateka, we should use the mitts as karateka and include all the strikes and methods that we don’t find in boxing. This is a solid example of how modern kit can be used to drill kata methods. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Jeb, I like whole series you posted recently. Lots of simple, but effective drills for basic techniques and principles.

That is a very true observation. Especially using both hands together (one hitting, one locating, clearing or trapping) is easily neglected when training with focus mitts.

Thank you sir!

That is very true! It's hard to find/ train good mitt holders! A lot of mitt sessions are good motivation to go a few rounds on the heavy bag! All the best, Jeb
Thanks for sharing! As I mentioned before, we have some similar drills. Another one I like for shuto is having the padholder hold the pads face-to-face, so you don't have an available striking surface. The striker then clears one of the pads to expose the other, and strike with shuto. We also use lots of other uke-waza for that pad position, but since this thread is about shuto, we won't get into all that :P

I will definitely use that! Thank you! Love to see the others as well! Jeb
Loving these drills guys! I'm a big advocate of using the focus mitts, it's great that you can train principles and techniques but I also like to train sequences from the kata (and not in the order of performance) so here is my take on Heian Shodan using the knife hand
You all are the best! I saw Jeb’s knife hand drills and stopped there. Grabbed a student to practice and will be back later. It is fantastic to find a group of martial artist who share and contribute so much. back later
Nice drills Jeb!

This one would seem to be a suitable addition to the thread.
In this one we see the non-striking hand locating the target, and then clearing a limb (the likely flinch as a consequence of the strikes).
As with the other examples in this thread, we are using the pads specifically as karateka by including the non-striking hand.
All the best,
Iain
