On Sunday the 20th of November 2022 I will be teaching a kata bunkai / practical karate seminar in Maldon, Essex!

At this seminar we will be looking at the applications of the “13-hands” family of kata: Hangetsu (Shotokan), Seishan (Wado-ryu) and Seisan (Goju-ryu and Shito-ryu). A solid case can be made that these are the oldest kata currently practised. Over time, numerous variations have evolved, but they still retain common features. It is also interesting to look at the various examples of the common combative principles that exist in the across the variations we have today. By comparing and contrasting, we find that not only does each style version stand alone, but we also get to more clearly see the underlying principles of the system that inspired all of those style variations. These are a very important set of kata that all pragmatically biased karateka should have an understanding of.

Ticket price: £35
