Shotokan Club Video

I decided to make a little video to advertise the type of trianing that I am offering in my Shotokan club.

I've found that making 'advertising' videos is quite difficult because you end up treading a fine line between trying to illustrate the fun and possibilities of training (because you are trying to run an inclusive club where people of a large range of ages and abilities can participate and develop), and showing that the training can also be demanding and intensive, all of which without putting people off. The net result is that I've not shown too much of our punching drills, but I've shown how we do our Kihon (predominantly padwork), Kumite (all bunkai, here showing examples from the Heian / Pinan and Tekki Shodan), and Kata (here showing Heian Sandan).

Hope you like it!  Feedback as to how I could improve it (what you think would attract you or your students) very welcome! I'll be making a separate video showing the DART Karate training in the near future.

All the best

That's a fun and upbeat video! When I started my small club this past spring, I worked with some marketing students at the college where I teach. They created a promotional video as part of a class project, and I think it turned out pretty well. If you know of any video and/or marketing students in your area, maybe you can work with them and their teachers/professors. If they can create it for course credit, then you wouldn't necessarily have to pay them...(nice to save some money on marketing while allowing students to develop their skills). Here's what the students created for me:

Thanks for the feedback David. I really like your video. It really gives a vibe of 'you could try this' which is perfect for a marketing video. I also like the way it showcases the good facilities.

Using overlapping footage (because some of the classes are joint with the Shotokan and DART students working side by side) here is a similar video focusing on the the DART Karate side of things.

Hope you like it!

Nice job! It does a great job of showing diversity of activity (I really like the skills-based warm ups...I just learned about that from one of Iain's podcasts and will start integrating that in my classes), and it shows kids classes being fun yet practical (hard mix to accomplish sometimes) while the adult classes being serious business, yet safe. Well done! Hope it brings you many long-term students. If I lived there, I'd join!

Best,

David
