Hi Jason,

This is a nice drill, I teach something similar at my classes too.

Apologies for how quiet the video is, wasn't planning to post the clip it was recorded as a reminder for the students of the club.

Hope you like.

Andy

May I ask, is this from a Shukokai/Shito Ryu perspective?

Relevent application, for strikes only bunkai. Do you have an application for a stand-up grappling version or indeed a groundworking version of the same combination.

thanks for adding this video, osu

Just a quick note to once again voice my support for sharing video like this. I think it really adds value and provides a great resource for our community.

When people post links to their videos, I will come along, in my admin role, and embed them as I’ve done here. I think that makes the videos easier to view and discuss.

All the best,

Iain

Firstly, hi Andy, thank you for the kind comment and great video. I will be sure to give that a bash : )

Hi Tau, indeed it is Mr Webster : )

Hi Ken, these drills are my own and not from Shito Ryu or Shukokai etc, i have indeed stand up grappling, lots of ground Bunkai demos/drills & table defence relating to Kata/Bunkai etc. in the new year i will post some of these on : )

Hi Iain, thank you for your support and embeding the videos, much appreciated : )

Kind regards,

Jason

Great videos - i wanted to add content to this thread by adding my own video and interpretation of the Heian Shodan/Pinan Nidan kata also:

I will try not get into detailed responce on peoples own drills etc, as for the most part I applaud such efforts.

2 main things to think about IMO-

1. Gedan Bari Uke- is it really that effective or useful as a strike to the groin, personally I think not and don't use it in that context. Gedan Tsuki or Uchi maybe from a more direct angle to make them bend.

2. The opponent, once you show the 'fixed' format, get into 'semi fixed' asap, it will allow for a more realistic reaction from your partner. The partner needs to move with the Bunkai, otherwise it doesnt 'fit' so well or becomes variable very quickly to keep remotly realistic.

Hi James,

the Gedan-Barai as strike to the groin is extremley effective, i know this from my own personal real life fighting experiences. as for a partner moving with the Bunkai, this is unrealistic and a real life opponent in the street would not do as such.

Kind regards,

Jason

Hi Jason, please call me Jim.

Fair enough re your comment on Gedan Barai being an effective groin shot, its not my experience or view but I can accept that.

Why wouldnt the partner move when you hit them? Why wouldnt they try to defend? Why wouldnt they crumple and change positon?

Granted you do mention this re the partner dropping when you hit them in the groin etc, but linking those movements in that way IMO would not be an effective Bunkai, or more accuratly an effective Oyo (application).

Just my opinion granted, be interested in others views.

Hi Jim,

maybe i miss understood what you are trying to say, are you talking in training or real combat? in real combat whatever the situation nothing is guaranteed to work. Your opponent will be struggling and fighting back atall times,  so for example in training if one studys arm locks etc, let your training partner go with it at first, then get them to really fight against it then one will see that it may not be as effective.

I worked as a doormen for 2 years, not that long i know, but like i said above i speak from personal experience. of course they would try to defend, but as for the first part of the drill in training, like i said above the partner moves with you so one can demonstrate to the class or for video footage. then drill it with your partner fighting against it.

I hope that answers your questions : )

Kind regards,

Jason

Hi Jason,

You had had some practical experience by the sounds of it, which is great.

My point is the bunkai shown for those movements IMO is not practical in the context of leading to decent application ability.

I guess we can agree to disagree and move on! Keep posting stuff, I do enjoy what members put up for sure.

Hi Jim,

the idea of posting Bunkai ideas on the site is to share and show another take on Bunkai, of course not everyone will agree with all the ideas etc. However if one person gets an idea or found another approach to explore Bunkai then job done.

We are all here to help, share and progress whatever the martial art we study. i appreciate everyones comments and views as they are all helpfull for everyone one, keep them coming : )

Kind regards,

Jason

That’s how I see it. One of the things I really like about this forum and the people it has attracted is the variation in views, and the respectful and intelligent way these differing opinions are discussed.

It would worry me if everyone thought the same as that would mean the discussions would produce very little interesting content. I also like the way we can avoid the “agree with me totally and completely or f### right off!” style of debates so prevalent on other internet forums.

As I’ve said before I’m really proud to have my name on the top of this forum and the thousands of views everyday means we must be doing something right. Thanks to all for their contributions to this thread and others.

All the best,

Iain

Yes fair point if this is a truly open place then we should all post honest critique, and of course support and praise where appropiate.

Let's see if that actually happens or we join the back slapping brigade! LOL

Keep in mind most people wouldn't post a negative comment, it's the way of the web.

Hi Iain, nice message, thankyou for that.

By creating this wounderfull site and the previous one it has brought many martial artist alike together, i think we have all made a new friend/s at some point along the way plus contacts, and of course opened up a whole new world of new ideas surrounding Bunkai and other topics.

So a big thank you to yourself, to all the hard work, & support and a big thankyou to everyone who uses the site and support also. : )

Kind regards,

Jason

Can I use your internet please? :-) My experience of the web is that most people on the web are very happy to post negative comments. A look at the comments under almost any YouTube video will confirm that. I’m not talking about critique but personal insults, threats (to individuals and their families), unnecessary profanity, etc. Granted we don’t have that here, but that’s because we’ve always had a strict position of not tolerating it. Needless negativity has no value. Considered critique is invaluable.

In all the years this board has been running I’ve never found the people who frequent her to be shy about making their opinions known, but they do tend to do so politely. It would be a pointless endeavour if those with opposing views did not express them and I hope that’s something that will always continue here.

All the best,

Iain

700 plus views and maybe 4/5 of us have a comment on a Bunkai video uploaded.....................

I agree here and other member vetted and controlled forums it is of course a better enviroment for decent discussion, but Iain people are shy in this enviroment.
