Nijushiho/Niseishi bunkai with Iain, and a medical emergency with Richard Poage

Hello, everyone,

Lots of people know Sensei Richard Poage through Waza Wednesday. This is the last episode we were able to film before he had a seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Information on the GoFundMe page to raise money for his medical costs is included in the video. Many thanks to Iain Abernethy for making the video, and supporting us through this!

I like Iain's application and the accompanying pad drill.

My personal take on the sequence starts with the same ridge hand to the back of the head and then grabbing the back of the neck.

But then my left hand shoots up with the ridge hand to the front of the neck or lower arm into the face. Following through into the palm of my right hand (like Empi into palm in Heian/Pinan Yondan).

With the next move (Sukui-Uke) I would grab the head with both hands and twist it counter-clockwise and down to takedown the opponent. The last move (double downward punches) then slams the head into the ground.

(I hope the description is good enough. I won't be able to video it at the moment.)

All the best,

Marc

I’m so very sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news. Richard passed away earlier today. Richard and the selfless contribution he made to our community will be sorely missed. Thanks to everyone who contributed to medical costs. This is obviously a very raw and painful time for this family and your kindness is sure to help. The kind words, thoughts, and contributions show how respected and well thought of he is. A very sad loss.

From Noah: It is with a very heavy heart that I inform everyone that Richard passed away last night, at 2:04am PST, at the age of 32, due to complications from the brain cancer he has been fighting. Here is our update from his partner, Tiffany, who has been with him during this difficult time:

He swept me off my feet and stole my heart in late 2009. Today, my heart has been ripped out of its chest, thrown on the ground and stomped in to a million pieces. Richard M. Poage transitioned on Wednesday, December 27 at 2:04am PST time due to complications from a brain tumor. He was 32 years old.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of you have been praying and sending positive, healing energy our way over the course of the last 3-weeks. I have been overwhelmed with gratitude as I've walked this journey with Richard and held space for him in person. We so appreciate each and every one of you.

Richard had such a big heart for everyone around him and his patience was beyond impressive. He has always taught perseverance, respect to self and to others as well as a steadfast commitment to elevate the art of Shorin-Ryu karate. His influence in the karate community will be greatly missed. His love and dedication of the art shone through in each and every moment.

He loved unconditionally. He was spontaneous and witty. Every phone call between us (even the not so pleasant ones) ended with him saying, "I love you." His passions, other than karate, were being outdoors, camping, four-wheeling, target shooting, hunting and fishing. You could always find him on the mat or in the woods or desert.

He listened to motivational speakers like Les Brown, Earl Nightingale and Wayne Dyer. He was a very spiritual person and consistently sought self-improvement and self-awareness.

On behalf of Richard, I would like to thank you again for being with us during his greatest fight. I always told him that he'd go out with a bang. Bruce Lee left this earthly plane from cerebral edema; he was 32. Richard joins one of the greats, and he wouldn't have it any other way!

I'll post details on his service as soon as it's set. Thank you. Thank you so very much.
