Katawa Guruma

Hi all,

I've just posted a short video breakdown of Katawa Guruma as labelled by Gichin Funakoshi.

It is important to note that this my way of viewing the throw and that it is not the same as the original version. Nonetheless, it is a valuable addition to the practical karate community.

Nice variation Leigh. I’ll share that via social media later today. Thanks for sharing!

All the best,

Iain

Hi Leigh, nice technique. It might be the angle of the camera or because you showing this slowly, I would place my hips closer to your uke. Avoiding being counter thrown with pinan godan application. Clip below shows what I mean, overall great stuff!

Kind regards Les

Always good to explore possible counters … especially when we see how the wider “karate matrix” interacts with itself. The counter-throw Les shows is essentially another of Funakoshi’s i.e. “Tani Otoshi” (not the throw that uses that name in Judo, but instead what judoka would call one-arm shoulder throw or Ippon Seoi Nage). So here we have a nice variation of Katawa Guruma; and a possible counter with a nice dropping variation of Tani Otoshi.

To quote Funakoshi when he presents these throws, “There are innumerable throwing and joint-locking techniques, and the important thing is to adjust according to the opponent, so the use of these methods should be left to the discretion of the researcher.”

I therefore think he’d approve of this thread :-)

All the best,

Iain

Thanks Iain

I was not aware of the name difference, very interesting. Thanks for this info, it just shows that we need to interact with other karate people, to be taken out of our bubble.

Kind regards

Les
