Jion Bunkai (opening moves)

Hi everyone,

the following video shows one of our own Bunkai drills for the opening moves for the Kata Jion, when this was filmed i was having problems with my back and in a lot of pain so wasnt 100% as it may show.

My good friend and student Andy assisted me in the video.

I hope you enjoy watching and it may be of interest.

Kind regards,

Jason

Hi Jason,

thanks for sharing you ideas.

I have a few questions. How likely is a grap to the lapel after getting smacked in the jaw? What if there comes no right hook? Whats the purpose of the kakiwake uke now? How would you follow up with the kick after the kakiwake uke? Would you aim for the back leg of the opponent?

Regards Holger

Hi, thankyou for your questions and interest.

a lapel grab would proberly most likely happen if the strike to the jaw say was not very effective or not a knockout etc.  most people who are right handed would say grab with their left to hit with their right.

Lets just say no right hook was thrown the Kakiiwake-Uke could be also be used as a direct strike to the face or even a push, or as the arms open the right hand strikes the left attackers grab and left hand striking the face of the attacker.

As for the kick its important to remember that the first thing the leg does when one kicks is the knee lifts, so if close quarter one may strike to the groin etc, making use of the knee driving your attacker back enabling you to deliver or finish the kick to whatever area is within range.

This is just one of our drills for this Kata and will share some more soon.

I hope this makes sense and is of some use.

Kind regards,

Jason
