Gojushiho Circular Motions and Shuto Strike

Hello again,

Here is my last one from my Gojushiho demonstration. This one looks at some possible applications for the circular motions (as performed in Matsubayashi) and the shuto strike.

Best,

Interesting video! My take on the more linear version of that sequence is found from 6:35 onward of this video.

Interesting side note: Funakoshi wanted to rename the kata “Hotaku” (woodpecker) because of the “pecking” nature of the nukite of this sequence … which I think is an awesome name for the kata! Unlike some of his other name changes, this one never caught on :-(

Thanks for sharing all these videos David!

All the best,

Iain

The circular motions of Gojushiho work well for a lot of deflections of various attacks, as well as clearing obstructions. Not that long ago, I actually uploaded a short video illustrating a simple application utilizing those concepts for this sequence.

Thanks Noah! Good set of videos in this thread! I’ll share the link to the page because I think people will enjoy comparting and contrasting the differing versions of the kata and differing takes on its application.

All the best,

Iain
