Fukyugata 2 Pad Drill 2

Here is a pad drill based upon the middle section of Fukyugata Ni. I like how it encourages students to consider other applications for "blocks," such as an uppercut punch for chest block and hammer fist for low block. It's a basic idea, but an important one for students to learn sooner rather than later. Using the pads makes those points more visceral for my students. Enjoy.

Best,

David

You’re building up quite a database on this kata David! Thanks for sharing here. The mix of bunkai and drills is important I think. Any good approach to kata needs both solid information, and solid ways to develop the skills needed to apply that information. I’m enjoying watching you share the various parts of your approach this kata.

All the best,

Iain

Thanks so much! I'm enjoying developing this curriculum along with a small but solid group of beginners and an intermediate student who are all open to these approaches. We just started some kata based sparring using elements from the first kata, Fukyugata Ich. What a blast and it blew their minds. Thanks again for the support and encouragement. More vids to come.

Best,

David

Hi David,

You’re welcome!

Great! I think that it is when people see kata “live and breathe” and feel it’s potency through live practise that they truly start to get it.

I’ve seen pictures of bears, but that can’t compare to the thrill I felt of seeing them close up in the wilds of the Canadian Rockies. Kata is that same. The solo form alone is like looking at pictures and reading text, but when you see it “in the wild” you truly realise it’s beauty and power.

I look forward to seeing more videos!

All the best,

Iain
