Chest Block Kihon Application Drill 2

Howdy,

Here is the second chest block kihon drill. The basic combination is chest block, reverse punch, lead-leg knee strike. We work that in traditional kihon fashion for speed, power, and technique. Then, we work this application with partners. It's a fun drill!

A well explained and nicely presented drill! Loving the way you encourage the maintenance and exploitation of the advantage once the motion has created the advantage.

All the best,

Iain

Thanks so much, Iain! Yes, I'm trying to impress upon the students (and myself) some key combative principles, whether they remember these specific combinations or not. With these drills, I'm emphasizing disrupting posture (putting enemy in compromised position) and placing oneself in a more advantageous position and then using that position to fight so as to escape. I think such ideas are beginning to take hold.

That’s a great sentence! That’s the key thing for me. It’s not the kata, or even the bunkai, that we use in combat. It’s the habits (i.e. internalised principles) that the kata and bunkai training have engendered that we really use. We will fight in accordance with those habits, and that is what will make us effective, flexible and efficient. I love how you’ve succinctly captured some key points there! I’m pleased the process is working and the ideas are taking hold too. Awesome!

All the best,

Iain
