Bunkai Impact Training--Fukyugata Ni Combo

I continue playing around with practicing some bunkai combinations from kata on the heavy bag. In this video, I'm working a combination from Fukyugata Ni, the second basic kata in Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu (this form was borrowed from Gojo Ryu). I'm working the "chest block," front kick, upper-cut elbow, "low block," reverse punch, shuto strike combination. There are many ways to interpret these movements, and I describe a few that work well on a heavy bag. Enjoy!

Best,

David

Hi David Nice work. Good solid impact & fluid transition between techniques. Regards Mark

Like it David! Thanks for sharing.

Is there any reason why the videos are “private” on YouTube?  Could be worth making them public so people can find them when surfing around YouTube?

Thanks once again for sharing these with us!

All the best,

Iain

Thank you, Mark and Iain, for your kind remarks and encouragement. I've been a bit reluctant about making the vids public on YouTube. Not sure if they were "good enough" and such... Also a bit concerned about nasty comments from wack-jobs. I could just turn off the comments... Thanks for the recommendation to go public!

Best,

David

They definitely are and I think they will be well received. I also think they will inspire people to consider other ways in which they work kata sequences on the bag. You don’t see much of that.

They are out there :-) What’s also an issue is people spamming the comments. They easy way to avoid both is to switch comments to “approved”. That way legitimate feedback and critique can find its way on there, but trolling and the “piggyback promotion” of poor quality material can be prevented because you simply don’t approve those comments.

The more good stuff there is out there the better. It all contributes to the collective knowledge pool and drives karate forward in a positive direction. I would defiantly make these public as I’m sure people will enjoy them.

All the best,

Iain

Hi David,

What your demonstrating on the bag is very valuable material ! Please keep it up. It's inspired me to work some of this stuff into my bag routine.

Regards,

Michael

Thank you all for the encouragement. Just returned from my first Sensei Abernethy seminar--awesome. What a great way to spend a weekend! Learning new material, meeting like-minded folks, and hanging out with your "tribe" as Iain says. Loads of fun and extremely informative (like drinking from a fire hydrant!).

I have a few other bag work videos I will post soon, and I'll continue to make more as the karate muse moves me.

Thanks again!

Best,

David

It was great to meet you in person David! It was a fun weekend and I thank you for your enthusiasm. Always good to watch a fellow karateka efficiently drop their training partner as both are smiling :-)

As Micheal says (echoing what I said to you in person) they will inspire people to train in that way and develop their own similar drills. So please do keep 'em coming! :-)

All the best,

Iain
