Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

I recommend the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, Emperor of Rome 161ad.

Initially I found this a bit hard going but there are some real gems, such as:

"Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life."

Very relevant to today as it was then.

Bye,

Ally

Hi Ally, This book is amazing.  I re-read it at least once a year, and each time I get something new.  If you are a fan of stoic philosophy, you should consider reading Seneca the younger's Moral Letters to Lucillius.  Especially the letter entitled "On the Shortness of Life".  I believe that to be a piece of prose that everyone should read.  I have provided below two links.  One to all his letters, and the second on to the letter that I mentioned above. Take care. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Moral_letters_to_Lucilius http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Moral_letters_to_Lucilius/Letter_49
