Damian Laszuk shows bunkai for Kyokushins Saifa

I’ve been chatting recently with Damian Laszuk from Poland. Damian sent me the link to his video showing his work with Kyokushin’sSaifa. It’s all in Polish, but is relatively easy to follow for those, like me, who don’t understand a word :-) To get an overview of the whole kata sequence you could skip ahead to 7:25

I’m truly delighted that more and more people are sharing information this way and I think it is the way forward for the “practical karate community”. Our collective efforts are sure to sure to have a far greater impact than our individual efforts. I hope that this is a trend that continues and I’m very grateful to Damian for taking the trouble to film this video and share it with us all.

All the best,

Iain

Hello everyone! I am glad I have found this community. I thank You all for Your efforts of returning Karate to its rightful place, and showing the true nature of it. As for the movie, I will be placing english subtitles soon. If You are interested please check the links in the clip.  The go to alternative applications. "cz.2" is a short for "czesc 2", which means "part 2" ;) Please comment, and let me know about Your ideas, and all of the adwise You would like to give me, and my brother. You may not see this in the clips, but a lot of what we show are his ideas. All the best for all of You, Damian

Always good to have another person on board, especially ones offering content.

It's been many years since I studied Kyokushin Kai, the head master of the branch I studied, Miyuki Muira, isnt even Kyokushin Kai anymore, he was with World Oyama, and is now apparently on his own.

Muira Shihan's bunkai from the late 1970's is fairly different.  It emphasized mostly speed and strength, no grabs as you've demonstrated.

Your bunkai reminds me a bit of Masaji Taira Sensei's renzoku bunkai drills--definitely some good stuff! I don't practice Saifa, but there are several movements in that sequence that are familiar to me, and I like your use of redirection and kuzushi! Thank you for sharing!

I could not find any of materials regarding Miyuki Muira on YouTube. If You have any, could You please send me some links?

Thank You for Your kind words, Wastelander.

I have seen some of his materials. A lot derrived from modern Wing Chun Kung Fu.

From my experience as a fighter, including mma, it is very hard, if not imposible, to use most of it in a fight with a skilled oponent. That is why his explanations did not satisfy me. I am trying to find applications that would work in as many circumstances as possible. Please check part 2a that is about wrestling clinch in Saifa.

I have added the subtitles for the main clip. When I will have time I` ll do the same for the rest application clips. Hope that helps a little more :)

Essentially the same info as the wiki page.

There is nothing on youtube regarding Kata, he has his own kumite kata, like World Oyama and Ashihara.

He dropped all the traditional Kata when he split from Kyokushin Kai in the early 1980's.

Muira holds the record for completing the 100 man Kumite at the Hombu Kyokushin Kai dojo in the fastest time, a little over 3 hours.

I appologize for that comment.

After digging bit deeper into the subject I have realized that the clip I watched, the one that Wastelander published was not Taira Masaji material. It was only about his work on one of the seminars hosted by Paul Enfield. And He is the one presenting techniques in that clip. With all the respect, he lacks the insight of Taira sensei in explaining the principals, and techniques. After watching the original Taira Masaji performances and his explenations I have to say that his knowledge is very deep, and makes a lot of sese. I learned a lot from just a few clips and whole new look at karate opened in front of me. His system is like a completely diffrent martial art, and yet It is Karate. Taira Masaji is agreat man, and seeing his passion in teaching next generation gives a lot of courage and joy. I might have never found those materials ii I did not join this community, so once again I thank all of You, and Iain in particular for inviting me here and sharing the knowledge.

Kyokushin Saifa Kata is very different to the Saifa Kata practiced by Goju Ryu and Shito Ryu/Shukokai etc, But I'm sure there's a few resemblences though

I would love to know if he's done a Bunkai Application of Sasai Oyama's Kata

I have been thought the Kata according to Hanshi Steve Arneil`s knowledge. He was Sosai`s direct student, and as far as I know, the best one performing the kata. During my 1kyu grading I have received his personal accolade for my performance of the Saiha.  As for my bunkai? It is mine :) Hanshi Arneil told me that Sosai did not give away many of his "secrets". Moreover I can not say that Hanshi gave away all of his while me being in the IFK organisation.  As far as I know, my bunkai is largely different in those details that Hanshi Arneil pictured.

As for Myuki Miura, if you type his name in the English version of wikipedia, you can copy and paste the Japanese spelling of his name in youtube and you can see some clips from the original japanese version of shijo saikyo no karate (the world's strongest karate)/The Fighting Black Kings and some other old 70s and 80s videos.

In 2006, my senpai showed me an old edition of Arneil's book and yes, the application don't look like the ones Damian demonstrated. In the edition I saw, Arneil wouldn't always show bunkai for the entire kata in the book.  Some of the senior dan grade students have been to seminars given by Steve Arneil and he did teach some bunkai, but again, what the senior students showed me differed from Damian's demonstration. The bunkai didn't "flow" as much as what Damian showed and look rather stiff.
