Good book on Judo kata?

Hi All,

I’m looking for a good heavily illustrated book that explains the kata of Judo. I have a few books that show a few of the kata, but I’m looking for something a little more comprehensive. Does anyone have any books they could recommend to me? Thanks in advance.

All the best,

Iain

I am on the same search.

Its hard enough finding a Judo Dojo that proactively teaches the kata too!!!

I think through our understanding of Karate Kata, and then Judo Kata will be a better understanding although through your Experiences of Bunkai, you will find the kata more "useable"

Iain, maybe you could write a book on the Judo kata if you can't find one, I'd buy it lol.

Otaki and Drager's "Judo Formal Techniques" for Nage and Katame-no-Kata

Kawaishi's Kata book is good fairly comprehensive - though not the Kodokan "standard", if you can find it at a reasonable price - it is rare.

Otherwise the Kodokan "Standard" Kata Instructional Series DVDs have superceded the printed page.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for that. I have “Judo Formal Techniques” (great description of kata in that book) and I’ll seek out the others you mention. Thanks!

All the best,

Iain

I'm going to guess that you probably have it but I think the best one I have read is Sato and Inokuma's.  Going from memory, I don't think it covers kata specifically, but the contents of the kata are there.  Also would check Mifune's.

Then there is "The Complete Seven Katas of Judo", haven't read that one...

And there is always the free info at Neil Ohlenkamp's ever-awesome paragon of Judo-ness:
