Here's a slightly different look at nijushiho. This video shows how movements 4 to 6 of can be used to parry a two-hand shove, control the head while throwing a shovel hook, and follow with a clinch and knee strike. Note that in this part of the kata, the left leg is back while the left arm sets up for a liver shot.
Hi Andy,
very good, I like that application a lot!
It also shows that the techniques, even if shown only once within a kata, are not limited to be executed only once. If you've got the opportunity, why not hit them two times in the same spot before you flow on to the next step. It is amazing how powerful the second punch in the guts can be when the first has loosened them up. The body has to relax at some point after the first hit, and that's exactly why the second shot has so much impact.
All the best,
Marc
Thanks, Marc. Simple and effective.
Thanks for sharing, Andy! We don't practice this kata in my style, but we do have similar punches in Passai, which we sometimes apply in the same way you show here.
Thanks, Noah. That makes sence because If I'm not mistaken, your version of Passai uses awaze zuki as is the case in this video. In Shotokan we use yama zuki in Bassai/Passai. Cheers!
